Annually, McDonald's restaurants in North Carolina invite employees and customers alike to share their heart with the five Ronald McDonald Houses statewide. In all North Carolina, McDonald's restaurants and patrons are invited to purchase a red paper heart for $1 each during the Valentine season. Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald Houses in North Carolina who provide "homes away from home" for families of seriously-ill children receiving treatment at area hospitals. Serving more than 2,800 families each year, Houses are located in Greenville, Durham, Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem and soon-to-be in Charlotte. Two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are offered in Winston-Salem, and one is available in Durham.
The hearts are displayed in the restaurant with the donor's name listed. Since 2007, more than $500,000 has been raised to help support the families and children who rely upon the Ronald McDonald Houses and the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms during a child's illness.
