April marks an incredible anniversary and milestone for The Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill. For 30 years, the House has been a haven of hope for brave families in the middle of one of their most difficult trials: caring for a sick child.
Since opening its doors on April 15, 1988, the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill has provided a “home-away-from-home” for families, keeping them close to children receiving treatment and care at UNC Hospitals. In its first year, the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill had just 19 guest rooms. Through the years, families staying at the House would not only be close to their children, they would enjoy amenities they could find in their own homes, as well as the support of other families experiencing similar struggles.
In 2005, the House started family support programs to provide activities, educational resources and emotional support for caregivers and siblings. The Chapel Hill community quickly learned that the Ronald McDonald House was more than just four walls. 1989 kicked off the first of many annual charity events, including the first annual Carolina Kids Classic Golf Tournament. The tournament continues to this day and will celebrate its 30th annual event in June. By 2015, the House doubled in size, adding transplant apartments, long-term stay suites and a family support building.
To date, the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill has served more than 40,000 families, hosting them from all 100 counties in North Carolina, as well as many other states and countries. Please join us in congratulating the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill for all the work it has done over the past 30 years, and all that it will continue to do over the next 30 years!
